How to Learn English?

Passion is the number one quality you need to learn English. However, there are many other things you need to consider learning English. Don’t do a single thing, instead do a number of things to learn English. The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they will make mistakes and people will laugh at them.  Don’t do this.  The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right.  Like anything else, learning English requires practice.
Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting big rewards of language learning. What did you do when you fell down in childhood? You got up and then started walking. So you need this approach to learn English. If you make a mistake, don’t give up, continue your practice until you learn it.
Be Resourceful
Some students don’t use many resources. They either listen to English or read English Grammar or just practice speaking English. Since most people learn from teachers, they depend on teachers and don’t try to work hard by themselves. Even if you study English at a language school, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class.  Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible will allow you to learn faster. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two.
The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything and for for language learner, Internet is a great support. Reserve some time for practice, some for grammar and some for listening. Don’t depend on one skill. You need to integrate everything.
Get Total Immersion
This means that you should surround yourself with English. You should think in English, Watch English movies, Listen to English music and meet people who can speak English. The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it.  Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts.  Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “Think in English".
Listen to the Speakers of English
If you want to learn a language, you must stay in contact with those who speak that language. It means you must listen to those who speak the language you want to learn. They may be native speakers or those already expert in speaking. So listen to them as much as possible. There are some good English teachers who had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it.  By listening to the speakers of English, students of English can get to the rhythm or flow of the English Language.

Watch English Movies, Music and TV
This is the fun side of language learning. You can also learn English by watching movies, listening to songs and watching TV. This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective.  By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors.  If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents. Music can be a very effective method of learning English.  In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension.
The best way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings.
You can easily get songs on the Internet. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time.  And if you like to sing, your speaking practice will be great. Don’t watch movies for story line or action, don’t listen to music for fun only; watch them for English language.

Learning by studying
The other methods are fine but nothing works like studying English. Only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises can you really improve your knowledge of any language. I know grammar is not everything, grammar is not the only thing but it’s extremely helpful and the most important when used with other methods. Grammar and reading books with the above methods will greatly and speedily enhance your language. So study as often as possible!. Do exercises and take tests. I know tests may not be fun but by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you an idea to compare your present results with those of the past.  By taking tests, you can tell how you know of English. By only listening and speaking, you cannot judge how much you know. Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned.  If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Read English, test your English and then see how much you improve.

Listening and Recording
Listen to English language courses which are  specially designed for you to learn English fast. Listen to audio books or CDs in English. Simply listening isn’t very helpful, it must be reinforced with speaking. Speak and record your own voice and then playback for listening. Nobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time. When you record today and compare with your recording after a month, this really tells you how much you have gained and how much more effectively you are speaking.
